Shared File Storage

MSE IT offers secure file hosting to department users.

  • Department shares (S:) – Access is controlled by department Active Directory groups. The supervisor for each area should contact MSE IT to update permissions.
  • Home drives (P:) – Access is limited to the individual faculty or staff member.
  • Group drives (X:) – Access is controlled by department Active Directory groups. The faculty member responsible for the research group should contact MSE IT to update permissions.

What to Store on Shared Drives

Shared file storage is intended for academic and administrative use. If you have temporary files that do not need to be backed up or large files that only need to be stored on the local computer, avoid saving to your shared drive. For example, save temporary files to a folder on the Desktop.

Connecting to Shared Drives

Mac users must manually map their drives in order to access network drive files. The same is true if connecting from off-campus or using campus wireless. On MSE-managed computers, departmental shares and home drives are available on your machien when you log in.

Service Support

MSE IT is responsible for supporting the server infrastructure, granting file access, making backups of the data, and recovering files when requested. Our standard request turnaround is one business day. CNS is responsible for connectivity through the campus network.

Backups and Recovery

Data stored on the shared drives is backed up daily to the campus TSM server for disaster recovery purposes.
